New LEED Platinum Office

Blach teamed with Mountain View-based Hawley Peterson & Snyder Architects (HPS) to renovate the foundation’s space, transforming a non-descript, 62,000 s.f. office building in the heart of Silicon Valley into the new, dynamic headquarters of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

The unique workplace speaks to the founders’ roots and their philanthropic interests and will attain a level of sustainability, LEED® Platinum for commercial interiors, which is rarely achieved in an office rehabilitation project. The project already has been honored as “2009 Green Project of the Year” by the San Jose-Silicon Valley Business Journal.

The Blach team worked closely with Mountain View-based Hawley Peterson & Snyder Architects (HPS) to demonstrate innovative building techniques throughout the course of the project.  Most significantly, two of the project’s highly complex features – “the Bridge” and “the Moore Path” – posed unusual challenges.

These two elements – a blend of wood, glass and steel forming a gravity-defying bridge that welcomes guests in the lobby and an undulating overhead trellis made of timbers rescued from historic mills that flows throughout the building – highlight the juxtaposition of technical versus natural, the office’s recurring theme.
