Widely believed to be most advanced facility of its kind, the recycling plant uses cutting-edge computer and aerospace technology to process all of the waste and recycled materials from all of San Jose’s commercial businesses and several residential areas, and will do so until at least 2027.

“We are proud to have assisted in the engineering and reconstruction of such a unique, sustainable project on the cutting edge of recycling technology,” said Tony Mirenda, project executive. “From the energy-efficient design, construction of electrical motors and gears to an 8,000 ampere electrical substation, this project featured many unique elements.”

Able to process up to 400,000 tons of waste annually, the plant houses the world’s most sophisticated Material Recovery Facility (MRF), with the intent of recycling at least 80 percent of waste material collected from San Jose businesses. This processing system gives Republic Services the ability to sort wet and dry waste, organics and recyclables to divert as much material as possible from the landfill.

Blach also assisted its client with the complicated permitting process through the City of San Jose for such elements as a brand new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling system for all of the retrofitted collection trucks as well as the anchorage and exiting planning for 50,000 square-feet of multi-tiered equipment and work platforms.
